Striping FAQ's

  • How long does striping last on a commercial parking lot?

This is dependent on the weather, the quantity of traffic, and the striping substance utilized. Striping can last up to two years if traffic is modest. Thermoplastic striping is thicker and more durable than paint, with a lifespan of 3-6 years. When it comes to striping, the best rule of thumb is to re-do it when it appears to be in need of it.

  • What kind of paint is used to stripe a parking lot?

In parking lot striping, there are several distinct types of paint that can be used:

    • Oil/solvent-based paint: The main ingredient in this form of paint is oil, as the name implies. Oil-based paint won't freeze or break down in freezing temperatures, unlike water-based paints, therefore it's popular in colder locations.
    • Oil-absed paints are the most popular for striping since they last the longest and are the most affordable.
    • Water-based paint: Made largely of water, water-based paint is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly option. It also dries quickly and can be used in traffic 15 minutes after application.
    • Thermoplastic paint incorporates plastic, making it more durable than traditional paints and an excellent choice for parking lot striping. However, that toughness will come at a price. The most expensive choice is thermoplastic paint.
    • Reflected paint has a reflective aspect when light touches it and bounces off the surface due to the addition of microscopic flecks or beads of glass. Road and parking lot stripes, as well as educational road markers, are all done with reflective paint.
  • What should I do if I want to change the parking lines in my parking lot?

There are a few options for accomplishing this. Stripes can be hidden by adding many coats of color-matched paint to the surrounding asphalt or cement. However, this is not a long-term solution.

The alternative option is to chemically dissolve the paint or use a grinder or scarifier to entirely remove the line. The stripe is ground down to the original asphalt or cement with these devices.

  • How do you paint the parking lot lines so well?

Be very careful! But, in all seriousness, parking lot striping is more difficult than it appears. Proper line painting necessitates a broad knowledge base, precision, and, for the greatest results, professional-grade tools. Do yourself a favor and get a pro to help you with this.

  • What is thermoplastic striping

Thermoplastic striping is a quick-drying substance that creates a consistent, reflective, and long-lasting pavement marking stripe. Traditional water-based paints cause traffic delays, coning, and the risk of material tracking due to their slow application rate and near-instant dry time. It also extends the life of pavement markings due to its excellent durability.

  • How long does it take to stripe a commercial size parking lot?

The size of the parking lot, the type of paint used (various paints have varied drying times), and the weather conditions at the time of application are all factors to consider. For organizations who wish to minimize downtime, line striping at night is a wonderful alternative.

  • How do you apply thermoplastic parking lot and road markings?

The application of thermoplastic road markings can be done in three ways:

    1. Extrude: When applying the material, the application equipment is in direct touch with the pavement surface.
    2. Ribbon is applied with a ribbon gun that is raised 1-1.5 inches off the ground. The application equipment can move a little faster than when applying an extruded line because the gun is not in direct touch with the paving surface.
    3. Spray: The substance is sprayed with a spray cannon raised 4 to 5 inches above the surface. This is the quickest method of applying.
  • Is ADA Handicap signage required in commercial and industrial parking lots?

That is contingent on how the parking lot is utilized. Buses, trucks, delivery vehicles, law enforcement vehicles, and car impound lots are not obliged to include handicapped areas or signage.

It's worth noting, too, that ADA signage requirements and guidelines are subject to local building authority codes and modifications. Check the legislation in your area.
